America’s Voices Against Apartheid to host public screening of Sarafina! and docent tours at Exhibition in the Kennedy Center on October 15, 2023
October 1, 2023
America’s Voices Against Apartheid invites you to indulge in music, cinema, and other experiential activities in an educational encounter about the history of apartheid and its ties to the United States.
On October 15, the America’s Voices Against Apartheid exhibit presents the film, Sarafina!, a true story of the struggles of youth during the apartheid in South Africa.
Since its release in 1992, the film has experienced a global reach and made an impact in the United States with its illustration of battles of pain and justice during the Civil Rights and Jim Crow eras.
Quote from Dr. Jean Bailey, America’s Voices Against Apartheid Project Director
“Sarafina! is a powerful film portraying a young woman’s fight in dismantling the apartheid system in South Africa. This is a unique opportunity to understand historical relationships and cultural and academic collaborations between South Africans and Americans.”
